Welcome everyone for YTMC Television program.
My name is A. I’m the host of today’s program.
Today I have a pleasure to meet and interview our experienced member TM I.
I’ve prepared several questions to ask how she is enjoying the club activities.
Let’s welcome I-san!
TM A
Well, I-san, you have been with this club for over 5 years, and I’m sure you’re enjoying activities.
First of all, I’d like you to know how you found this club and why you decided to join YTMC?
TM I
I found this club YTMC on the internet. At that time, I transferred to the new office which is the international Exchange Center at a private university in Tokyo.
Suddenly, I was assigned MC, Master of Ceremony for welcoming ceremony for guests from overseas. But I’ve never experienced MC nor could speak English. I need to practice in practice.
And I searched the internet and found this Yokohama Toastmasters Club. The welcoming atomosphere and wonderful speeches, I thought. This is the one I want it to join.
TM A
What a great story, I-san. And would you please tell us what you learnd the most from YTMC?
TM I
I learned a lot from this YTMC. If I say the most, the attitude of members such as their self-improvement, and challenging and learning spirit.
TM A
For example?
TM I
Toastmasters club organize a speech contest. It’s a not business, but members try to get roles voluntarily and they’re to do such a job and make it successful. So that’s a very wonderful. And also members are enjoying every occasion like they enjoy giving speeches, also socializing, and having drinking party after meetings. And I feel very positive after joining this club, so that’s very wonderful.
TM A
Wow, it seems that Yokohama Club is offering so much variety of activities.
Also, I-san, you told me at work you’re using your skills you acquired from YTMC.
Could you tell us about that?
TM I
Oh, yes. The one I can use and I think it’s useful at workplace is evaluation. In Toastmasters Club, there is evaluation session and it’s worth for me a lot especially at my workplace. I like the so called “Toastmasters Sandwich Style Evaluation”
TM A
“Sandwich Style”! What is that?
TM I
“Sandwich Style” is first we give a speaker’s encouragement, and then we give the advice for improvement, and then finally we say what I expect from speakers. So it’s many useful not only at work but at home too. And in our stressful and busy working condition, it’s easy to say criticizing but I found it’s very important to encouraging and praising.
TM A
Right, evaluation is so important, I really agree with you on that point. Before I joined Toastmasters, I didn’t know the benefit of Evaluations. I learned a lot as well about that.
Well, the last question to you. Outside of your YTMC, people out there are wondering if they should try to come to YTMC or not. Do you have any advice for those people?
TM I
Oh, yes. If you hesitate or think whether you can join or not, I definitely advice you to join. Because you can quit anytime. If you think that does not fit to you, you can quit. But in such short periods you can learn anything from this experience and if you like it, you can keep going. I’m sure you can give wonderful speeches, also you blush up your leadership skills, and then you expand your human relationship not only in YTMC but more like I did.

Iさんは5年以上このクラブに在籍され、楽しく活動されていることと思いますが、はじめに、どうやってこの横浜トーストマスターズクラブをお知りになったのか、また入会しようと思った動機を教えてください。
TM I
横浜トーストマスターズクラブはインターネットで見つけました。当時私は、東京にある私立大学の国際交流センターのオフィスに移動になりました。
そこで突然私は、海外ゲストの歓迎セレモニーの司会をやることになったんです。ですが私には司会の経験もなかったし英語もうまく話せませんでした。私には実践の練習が必要でした。それでインターネットで検索してみたところ、この横浜トーストマスターズクラブを見つけました。私を歓迎してくれる雰囲気と数々の素晴らしいスピーチを体験し、私が入りたかったのはこういう所だと思いました。
TM A
なるほど、Iさんには大きなきっかけがあったんですね。
IさんはYTMCから学んだことで一番大きなことは何ですか？
TM I
YTMCからは多くのことを学びましたが、一番大きかったのは各メンバーの心構えです。
自己改善だったり、チャレンジだったり、学ぶ姿勢だったり。
TM A
具体的に言うと例えば？
TM I
トーストマスターズクラブでは、スピーチコンテストも計画して運営します。
仕事でないにも関わらず、メンバーは自発的に役割を引き受け、任務をこなし、コンテストを成功に導きます。これは本当に素晴らしいと思います。その他にもメンバーは英語スピーチをしたり、メンバー間で交流したり、例会後の飲み会に参加したり（笑）、あらゆる機会を楽しんでいます。クラブに入会後、こういった積極性を特に感じ、これもまたとても素敵なことだと思っています。
TM A
なるほど、横浜クラブは本当に多くの様々な活動を提供してくれますよね。
IさんはYTMCで学んだスキルをお仕事でも活用されているとおっしゃってましたが、それについて少し詳しく教えてください。
TM I
そうですね、私が職場で実際に活用して、とても役立っている一つが論評(evaluation)です。トーストマスターズクラブでは論評セッションがあるのですが、それは私にとって、特に職場で大きな価値を感じています。トーストマスターズのいわゆる「サンドイッチスタイルの論評」が好きなんです。
TM A
「サンドイッチスタイル」？ それは何ですか？
TM I
「サンドイッチスタイル」というのは、はじめにスピーカーの励みになることを伝え、それから改善のアドバイスをします。そして最後にスピーカーに期待していることを伝える、というものです。その方法は、仕事だけでなく家庭でもとても役立っているんです。
ストレスが多く多忙な職場環境の中で、批評や非難することは簡単ですが、相手を元気づけ、また褒めたたえることがとても重要だということがわかりました。
TM A
論評がとても重要な理由、私もその点において全く同感です。私もトーストマスターズに入会する前は論評の意義をわかっていませんでしたが、多くのことを学びました。
さて、最後の質問になります。まだYTMCの会員でない皆さんの中には、YTMCを見学しようかどうか迷っている方もいると思いますが、そういう方に向けてなにかアドバイスをお願いします。
TM I
そうですね、もし参加するかどうかためらっている人がいたら、絶対に参加されることをおすすめします。なぜなら、いつでも辞めることができるからです（笑）。YTMCが自分に合わないと思えばいつでも辞められます。でも短期間で体験したことから何かを学び、それが気に入ったら続ければいいのです。私自身がそうであったように、きっとあなたも素晴らしいスピーチを披露し、リーダーシップスキルを磨き、そしてYTMC内だけでなく、それ以上に人間関係を広げることができるでしょう。
